  1. (1)I recently read an article concerning emergency rooms that persons with disabilities can benefit from if they are older patients. Park Plaza Hospital and Medical Center in Houston TX. debuted its senior emergency department in October. Senior ERs offer quiet  private rooms, dimmable lights, extra -padded mattresses, non-glare floors and blanket warmers. Doctors and nurses are trained in geriatrics. (AARP Bulletin,Jan.-Feb.,2011, p 6) Locally we should petition hospital administrators for this type of service.
  2. (2)The average life expectancy in the United States has increased by nearly 10 per cent over the past four years. Currently those over the age of 80 represent the fastest-growing demographic. Individuals surpassing their 80th birthday have been found to live an average of up to nine additional years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hearing loss is one of the most common conditions among seniors. One in tree adults older than 60 and half of people older than 85 experience hearing loss. ( Hearing Health , Winter 2011, p 27)
  3. (3) Stress touches everyone. Demands at work, family crisis, guilt, uncertainy about the future, dissatisfaction with the past-these all are hard enough. All this along with the general events of life, can put enough pressure on people that it affects their physical and mental health. Jesus shows by precept and example that seeking God at a quiet time and place is the best remedy for life's stresses (Mark 6:31) If we will allow Him , the Lord will help us deal with the pressures that are such an inevitable part of life here. (Adult Teachers Quarterly, p 29, Jan. 8, 2011)
  4.  (4)"CHOICES" is a program implemented a year ago, that provides in-home services as an alternative to nursing home care through Tennessee's Medicaid program, TennCare. During the program's first nine months, enrollment in home-and community-based services jumped from 18 to 25 percent, which is about 7,000 people. For more information, call 1-866-836-6678 toll-free or go to tn.gov/tenncare/CHOICES. (AARP BULLETIN.MARCH 2011, P 32.)
  5.  (5) "   Take an hour to cool off  before responding to someone who has provoked you. If it involves something really important, take overnight." Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32  (Life's Little Instructions From The Bible 251)
